You Need To Make Sure Your Kids Are Safe When They Are On The Internet

By Brandie Lawson

As your children get older and use the computer, when they are on the Internet, you need to be thinking about what they are doing. When your children are not at home, they have plenty of places where they can gain access to the Internet, such as, if they have a cell phone, when they are at school, or even the friend next door. It is a parental responsibility to keep their children's Internet usage safe, and also have them use the resources for information.

If you give your children too much freedom to view the Internet while alone, they may go to websites that you don't allow. The Internet is a place that you go individually on your computer, and you don't necessarily like someone watching you, and children are no different, but with some of the bad places you find there, children need to be monitored. Any place that they whole family uses, is a good location for the computer that the younger children are able to use, with or without supervision. Looking at websites online in their own room, is not a very good idea, especially for young children. Wise parents will protect their children from any bad influences, when possible, so this goes for the Internet also.

In most cases online if a child is approached by a predator nothing happens as kids know not to respond to them. If someone succeeds in making contact with your child then something you need to be alert of are the warning signs of this.If your child is involved in any unusual phone activity, this could be cause for concern. If your kid receives a gift or a parcel from someone then you should definitely check it out. If your child is being secretive in anyway then you should be on the lookout for it, whether it is on the internet, phone or offline.

Connect with your child online so you can keep track of what they are up to. You should learn more about the internet if you do not know as much as your child, as this is often the case. If your child is part of any services or social networks then you should join them and add them as a friend. You do not have to do this is a heavy-handed way, just use the internet as another way to stay in touch. You should email and instant message them every while. Your child is in their own universe and this will keep you in it as well.

There are many methods with which to see that your child stays out of harms way when surfing the internet, you just need to be thorough. Of course you want your children to develop a certain amount of independence, but when it pertains to the internet, there is a level of danger that needs to be addressed. When you are taking an interest in the involvement of your child on the computer, you are giving yourself the assurance that they are safe.
