Donate Non Profit And Be A Hero

By Sheena Hernandez

Many people make the decision to donate non profit. Maybe you have a little extra cash and you want to do something nice for the world. That's great. Find a good cause and write the check. However, if you don't have funds, then be assured that you can still give your time, or your skills, or items you are not using. Everything is appreciated.

A charity is a 501(c)3 organization that has special tax breaks. Some of them include social services agencies, libraries, schools, and more. They often rely on the donations of supporters to meet their expenses. Because of their special status with the IRS, they are required to be very transparent about their finances. Usually you can find out all the details through various websites.

Some donors prefer to be anonymous. Other donors want recognition and the nonprofit will be sure to do that. They might name a building or room after the donor. Sometimes their name is placed on a plaque or mentioned on a press release. Be sure to let the group know what your preference is before you hand over the check.

There are benefits to donating. You will receive a receipt that can be used as a decision on your taxes. For the individual, this is usually not enough to motivate you to contribute. Large companies are another story. Often, their donation is driven by either the tax break or the potential public relations push.

Larger nonprofits usually employ a full-time fundraiser who spends his or her day soliciting donations from individuals and corporations. A good fundraiser is much the same as a food salesperson and usually has the same skill set.

If you are not sure where to donate non profit, do some research on websites like guide star. These sites help you determine which is a solid mission and spends their money well. After doing your homework, you can feel good about getting involved in the support of worthy causes.
