You Can Receive Teen Help For Your Troubled Teen

By Buddy H. Rhames

By removing a troubled teen from what may have turned into a corrosive environment, you can get your teen the teen help that he or she needs.

Some teens are surrounded by drugs, sex, and violence, and they have trouble escaping the negative influences around them. Their peers and the media influence them to behave in ways that are bad for them and their families. If troubled teens stop listening to their parents or going to them for guidance, it can cause serious problems. They are not being held accountable for their choices and are failing to develop as they need to do.

A troubled teen may act like he or she knows everything, but often there is a lack of self-esteem on the inside. If troubled teens have an opportunity to improve their decision-making skills, it can boost their self-confidence.

Some teens are suffering from depression or experiencing problems with substance abuse. School problems or even problems with the law are sometimes seen among teens who show contempt toward authority figures. For troubled teens, sometimes a fresh start at a new location is necessary for them to have the greatest chance at success.

A few years ago, I started noticing resentment and bad decision-making from my daughter. Things quickly got out of control after her grades dropped and she didn't appear to care. She didn't actually come home some nights after she got arrested for shoplifting. My family needed to find some way to help her.

One promising program for teen help is wilderness therapy, and it gave my daughter the assistance that she needed. The program was quite challenging, and she explains now that it was the best thing that ever happened to her.

Troubled teens learn skills necessary to survive in the wilderness when they are placed in a wilderness therapy program. Perhaps more significantly, teens learn how to make good decisions. They can learn who they are on the inside when they are removed from distractions in the wilderness. By working in a group to solve problems, they learn to think of the needs of other people rather than just their individual needs. Teens need a chance to develop leadership and decision-making skills.

Teen help is provided by wilderness therapy when teens develop courage and a respect for true work.

To help your troubled teen, make sure the wilderness program you choose has excellent safety procedures, a well-developed curriculum, and a staff with experience. Some programs have a curriculum that allows troubled teens to earn academic credits in language arts, physical education, food and nutrition, and other course. With teen help, healthy, happy, and successful teens can return to their communities.
