Be Prepared With An Earthquake Checklist

By Adele Bolton

Many people worry about a disaster plan and what they would do if they ever had to leave their home on a moment's notice. Tornadoes, floods and hurricanes are just a few disasters that many people face as they tend to live in areas where these are more common. For others, they need to consider an earthquake checklist. Knowing what to bring and what you should do in the middle of a natural disaster will help you get to a safe area faster.

Everyone should be prepared for something like this. All medications should be listed and packed if possible, flashlights, water and food and a list of emergency names and phone numbers in case you have to reach someone. A first aid kit is also nice to have in case there are any little cuts or scrapes that will have to be addressed.

Having a set meeting place for your family to go to is also very important. If your children are not with you, they need to know where to go to meet up with you. Younger kids may need to run to a friend's house but older ones may be able to meet on a street corner or a nearby park. It doesn't matter where your meeting place is as long as everyone is clear about where to go.

When you have bought and collected everything important for your emergency kit, buy a bag that is designated especially for an emergency. A red bag is usually a good choice as it is often identified as an emergency and can be easily seen.

Be sure to keep it where it is safe and ready for you to grab, perhaps near the front door or in a nearby closet. If you want to get out in a hurry, you will want to grab it on your way out.

Making a checklist of things to do before you get out the door will help you focus in a frantic situation. If you know you need to turn off your gas before you leave, write it on the list. You may want to turn off your water supply so make sure that is written down also. Do what you can now before everything becomes crazy so you can focus on what will need to be done.

No one wants to think about a disaster hitting their homes but it is always good to be prepared for one. Having an earthquake checklist for those who worry about being caught in one will bring comfort knowing that you are as prepared as possible and will guide you through the process of securing your home before you leave it.
