Colic Relief For Cranky Babies And Their Parents

By Maura Lara

A colicky infant can cause parent's some sleepless nights and definitely some worry. As the child grows, however, colic gets better and finally disappears. There are quite a few ways to give your child some colic relief.

A warm compress or hot water bottle on baby's tummy can often relieve any stomach pain and also help relax the child. A heating pad may also work but be sure to monitor the heat settings so it does not get too hot. Holding the child up against your body can also provide warmth.

Different positioning can also offer relief. One of the best ones is a 'colic hold.' Place the infant face down on your forearm, with their head in your hand (small babies only) or their head by your elbow. You can gently bounce the child to aid in comfort. This position can help get rid of any tummy pain and also give them something different to look at. Distracting the baby often helps with colic.

Go outside. Sometimes being exposed to fresh air can help quiet an unhappy baby. It is better for mom or dad, too, instead of being inside with a crying infant. You may need to plan on going for a walk either holding the child or taking the stroller.

Taking a car ride has worked for fussy babies for decades. Many middle of the night car rides have been taken as a last resort to calm a cranky child.

A warm bath can help with pain and also help the infant relax and go to sleep. A light stomach massage can also help, especially if the problem is gas. Move fingers in a circular motion, pressing gently, on the infant's abdomen.

Colic relief can come from many different sources, as there can be many causes for the child's distress. Other methods of relief can be found online or by talking to people that have suffered through it themselves. As the child matures, it becomes less of a problem and thankfully, a memory. colic relief
