The common signs that a partner is hiding their debts

By Fergal Pollock

The recent financial crisis in Great Britain had a large negative effect on a lot of people and left many struggling with debt which they didn't previously have. In some cases the debt has been caused by the increase in cost of certain items but in other instances some people are now struggling with debt because they or their partner were made redundant as their employer cut back to try and save money.

When people are struggling with an uncertain financial situation or debt problems they also experience a high level of pressure and stress. Some people deal with this better than others but many in relationships try to deal with the debt problems without their partner knowing. When they are unable to do this and the debt escalates, a lot of people try to keep the debt hidden but this only makes the problem much worse.

There are a lot of different tell-tale signs which people can keep their eye out for if they are somewhat suspicious that their partner might be hiding debt problems from them. The first of these signs and often the most common is that their partner will be either hiding or destroying documents like bank statements, credit card statements, late payment charge letters and bills. The person does this to stop their partner from discovering the problem or questioning their finances.

Another of the many signs of a person who is hiding debt problems is their reaction when the subject money is brought up. People who are trying to hide debt from their partner are likely to react very defensively when their partner brings up the subject of money. They might also try to change the subject quickly or even pretend that they didn't hear.

Some people get in debt because they can't control their spending of unnecessary purchases. In this case a person will try to hide their debt by providing excuses of how they can afford things such as it was on offer or they received a bonus from work. It is unlikely that this will be the case however. Finally if a partner is receiving calls from numbers which don't usually call them and they aren't answering these calls, they might be avoiding creditors chasing them for payment.
