Skills To Save Yourself From Being Mortified By Malicious Jokes

By Shiela R. Hill

Has someone ever attempted to humiliate you in public? Making you the butt of his or her insensitive jokes? So how did you react? If you're new to this experience, here are some tips on how you can handle the situation:

Ignore it. People who make fun of others usually are insecure and seek to gain attention by making someone feel bad. To counteract these sorry freaks, don't do anything. Ignore him or her. Do not give the person the satisfaction of even noticing what they said. Keep talking as if they do not exist. Sooner or later, they will give up humiliated for having the tables turned on their sorry asses.

Joke back. Witty people have a way of deflecting negative attention back to their attackers. If you are one of those people with this gift, use it to your advantage.

Just make sure your comeback is witty and delivered in style. This has two purposes. The first is to defend yourself. The second is to intimidate your attacker. If everyone laughs when you make your comeback, the bully will think twice about delivering another blow as he or she might come up short and become the butt of the joke.

Accept it. So what if they make you the butt of their joke? Who the hell cares? You are the king! You are royalty while they are the court jesters. Yes, you're too confident to even regard anything they say as important. By accepting it with disdain, you automatically invalidate whatever they say.

Look behind the joke. Perhaps understanding the reason the joke was made in the first place can give you insight to your opponent's feelings. Perhaps in a previous incident you hurt him or her unintentionally and the person is taking it out on you through a joke. In private, ask the person if there is anything wrong. You might be surprised by the answer.

Everyone needs the skills to handle themselves in situations that are disconcerting or even embarrassing. Remember, it's not what happened to you but how you handle it that counts.
